- The Dodgers agreed to take on part of the remainder of lefty David Price's deal while shipping burgeoning outfielder Alex Verdugo to Boston and right-hander Kenta Maeda to the Minnesota Twins.
- In turn, the Twinkies sent hard-throwing pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol to Boston.
The Los Angeles Dodgers seemingly acquired All-Star right fielder Mookie Betts from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in a three-team deal that also included the Minnesota Twins, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
It's since been held up "due to questions regarding the health of one player [Brusdar Graterol] involved in the deal," per Passan, but "officials with the teams remain confident it will be completed." You can find the details of the trade below:
That's a lot of moving parts. The biggest one is Betts, who won the American League MVP Award in 2018, has reeled in four consecutive Gold Gloves and is entering his age-27 season.
He figures to significantly boost an already deep Dodgers lineup and improve their odds of winning their first title in 31 years. So the question is: Where does this deal rank among the biggest blockbuster swaps of the last 10 years, with the emphasis on the acquiring team and the prospects given away plus a dollop of subjectivity?
Let's take a look, with the caveat that this is a subjective exercise—especially since we don't know how Betts will do during his stint in SoCal.

In the 2017-18 offseason, the Miami Marlins dealt right fielder Giancarlo Stanton and his massive contract to the New York Yankees. The Yankees unloaded the contract of veteran second baseman Starlin Castro but also gave up a pair of intriguing young players in right-hander Jorge Guzman and infielder Jose Devers.
The Yanks acquired a masher who hit 59 home runs and won a National League MVP Award in 2017. However, he played only 18 regular-season games for New York in 2019 while battling injuries.
At age 30, Stanton is young enough to bounce back, and if he does, he's among the most fearsome hitters alive. This swap could still end up looking strong on the Yankees' ledger.

If Betts leads the Dodgers to a title, it'll be a win for L.A. On the other hand, Alex Verdugo has star potential, and Price is owed $96 million though 2022.
Above all else, there's basically zero chance Betts will give Los Angeles anything approaching a discount in free agency. B/R's Zachary Rymer wrote in June 2017 for a piece titled "MLB Metrics 101: Top Candidates for MLB's 1st $400 Million Contract" that Betts was the third-most-likely player to reach that figure.
More recently, Jeff Passan noted that Betts "is expected to seek a contract well in excess of $300 million and perhaps even $400 million."

In November 2014, the Oakland Athletics traded third baseman Josh Donaldson to the Toronto Blue Jays for infielder Brett Lawrie, righty Kendall Graveman, shortstop Franklin Barreto and lefty Sean Nolin.
Donaldson went on to win American League MVP for the Jays in 2015 and finished fourth in AL MVP balloting the following season. Meanwhile, the players the A's received didn't contribute nearly enough to justify this swap.
This was a Billy Beane misfire and a big gain for the Blue Jays, who reached the American League Championship Series in 2015 and 2016.

In August 2017, the Houston Astros acquired righty Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers for a package of prospects, including right-hander Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers.
Those prospects could still pan out for the Tigers, who are in the midst of a rebuild. But Verlander helped the Astros win a World Series in 2017 and won an AL Cy Young Award in 2019 while posting 300 strikeouts in a league-leading 223 innings.
Unless any of the prospects pan out, this is the mother of all one-sided swaps.

The Miami Marlins underwent an everything-must-go sale under newly minted executive Derek Jeter.
With that order in place, they sent outfielder Christian Yelich to the Milwaukee Brewers after the 2017 campaign for outfielders Lewis Brinson and Monte Harrison, infielder Isan Diaz and right-hander Jordan Yamamoto.
The cost-cutting Fish could get value from the deal, but Yelich went on to win NL MVP honors in 2018 and finish second in NL MVP voting in 2019. He's become one of the best players in the Senior Circuit and posted the third-best WAR in the game last year, per FanGraphs.
So maybe not a player the Marlins should have flipped, and a coup for the Brew Crew.
