Axe: Last call for the Carrier Dome as we know it - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. —Last call, Syracuse fans.

The Carrier Dome as we know it is about to change forever.

When the final buzzer sounds on Sunday afternoon following the Boston College-Syracuse women’s basketball game, you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay there.

The Dome isn’t going anywhere, it’s just getting a badly needed facelift.

Still, there is a twinge of sadness in one of the most recognized images in the Syracuse skyline getting a new look. I just haven’t gotten used to the rollercoaster-like truss system starting to take shape on top of the Dome.

It looks like some funky vision of what Syracuse will look like years from now.

I mean, it is 2020. I guess the future is here.

A busy weekend of games will send the Dome off, although not as busy as we once thought.

The No. 9 University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team decided to stay home instead of playing No. 4 Syracuse at the Dome on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., citing weather concerns. Gary Gait’s squad will now travel to College Park on Saturday instead of having a senior night, alumni celebration and once last dance in the Dome on Friday.

Fear the turtle? More like #FearTheFlurries.

The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team will start the closing ceremonies now against Hobart at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. It will be the 106th meeting between the schools and the Krause-Simmons trophy will be on the line once again.

After Friday, the men’s lacrosse team will be outdoors more often than it is used to this season. Hope you bought extra hand warmers, fellas.

It’s fitting that so many Syracuse basketball icons that played under the teflon bubble and made it one of the most famous college basketball atmospheres in the country will be back in town on Saturday to watch John Wallace get his No. 44 sent to the rafters ...then presumably taken right back down so it doesn’t get dust on it during construction.

The Dome’s new fixed roof will mark the end of an era for SU fans. No longer will we look forward to the whoosh of being pushed out of the Dome’s air-supported revolving doors after games.

I’m sure Pete Sala, the long-time guardian of the Dome, won’t miss worrying about how much lake effect sits on top of the bubble and how the heck he’s going to melt it off.

I don’t know about you, but I’m going miss the view after passing the Tully exit and just before the Onondaga Nation coming north on Route 81.

When that familiar white, teflon bubble sitting high above Central New York came into view, you knew you were home when you saw the Dome.

What memories dances to mind when that Dome roof came into view?

Pearl’s half-court shot? Michael Owens’ 2-point conversion? The Gait Brothers revolutionizing the game of lacrosse? Jim Boeheim arguing with a referee? The sweet backcourt of Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes?

There’s so many Dome memories that, to steal a term from Terrance Mann in the movie “Field of Dreams,” we have to brush them away from our faces.

Maybe it was a high school playoff game, a Monster Jam truck roaring, 30,000 hockey fans watching the Syracuse Crunch and Utica Comets play or Bruce Springsteen hitting the right notes on “Born in the USA.”

We’ll just have to get used to the new look, I guess.

If Jim Boeheim can improve his wardrobe from the plaid suits of the 1970′s, the Dome can get a makeover.

We’ll see you in September, Carrier Dome.

You may be new and improved then, but the memories forged under your old roof will not soon be forgotten.
