A total of eight accidents occurred on the bypass over a short time span Saturday, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. While some had no or minor injuries, one single-vehicle accident sent the driver — who DCSO said is believed to have been intoxicated — to the hospital with critical injuries.

According to reports, at approximately 4:28 p.m. heavy rain occurred for approximately 5 minutes and caused an accident with minor injuries to occur at HWY 603/Pleasant Valley Exit and the bypass.

While deputies were en route, they came upon another accident with injuries that occurred on the bypass under the bridge to I-165 in the eastbound lanes. It was a single vehicle accident, where a pickup had run off the roadway and completed three full rollovers, according to DCSO.

The deputy who arrived was the first responder on scene and began to provide medical aid to the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle with an off-duty nurse and paramedic, while informing central dispatch by radio of the accident.

According to the release, the driver had sustained serious and life-threatening injuries and was trapped in the vehicle, which later had to be freed by mechanical means by firefighters. While on scene, it was discovered that the driver was wearing a seat belt, which kept him from being ejected out of the vehicle.

It was also believed that the driver was operating while under the influence of alcohol, according to DCSO. The driver was eventually transported by AMR to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

According to DCSO, the location of this accident was in the area of the bypass where “there was very limited visibility due to the terrain of the area. With the off and on rain, this made visibility very poor.”

DCSO officials said that caused an additional six accidents to occur in the area. In two of those accidents, drivers sustained minor injuries and needed to be transported to the hospital.

The DCSO shift supervisor had to request additional assistance from both Kentucky State Police and Owensboro Police Department to help work the accidents, along with multiple units from both Daviess County Fire Department and volunteer fire departments while they waited for AMR units to arrive.

The incidents caused both eastbound and westbound lanes of the bypass in the area to be partially shut down for 2.5 hours.
