VERNON, CT — Two serious motorcycle crashes occurred on Vernon's two main roads nearly simultaneously Sunday afternoon.
The crashes were five minutes apart, police said.
The first took place at 1:38 p.m. on Talcottville Road (Route 83) near Pitkin Road, according to a preliminary crash report. A southbound vehicle was attempting to make a left-hand turn into the CVS parking lot at 142 Talcottville Road when it collided with a motorcycle heading north, police said. The motorcycle driver was taken to Rockville General Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
The other occurred on Hartford Turnpike (Route 30) near Cold Spring Drive at 1:43 p.m. The driver of a motorcycle was on the westbound side of Hartford Turnpike and was attempting to pull over for an emergency vehicle trying to get the the Talcottville Road crash, according to a crash report. The driver then lost control of the bike and crashed for some unknown reason, according to the report.
Life Star helicopter was initially called for the Talcottville Road crash, but was diverted to Vernon Center Middle School for the Hartford Turnpike crash, fire officials said. The driver of the bike on Route 30 was flown to an area hospital, police said. The driver's condition was not known Monday morning.
Both roads were completely shut down while the crashes were investigated. Names of those involved were being withheld Monday, per completion of reports.
