As the conference realignment wheel continues to spin in college sports, the Big 12 Conference is seeing its stock grow bigger as a landing spot for schools looking for more sturdy structure. With the Pac-12’s future in question, a few of its member schools are rumored to be involved with the Big 12 in potential talks. The Dallas Morning News confirmed a CBS report that league has met with some of those Pac-12 schools, but reports it does not expect moves soon.
“For all the reports of the Big 12 meeting with four to six Pac-12 schools — which were absolutely correct — talks were still in the early stages, industry sources say,” the report stated. “Nothing major is happening at least for a while.”
This report comes off of the heels of the news that SMU could be a team involved in expansion talks this time around as well. Because of its location in Texas, SMU could see a path to joining the Big 12, though the ACC and Pac-12 were also linked to the school. Regarding the Big 12, the Mustangs could use their Texas ties to join a league that already features Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and, in the future, Houston. The Big 12 could also possibly land Oregon and Washington in the future, if the Pac-12 struggles to stay together with these moves.
According to Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, a source would be, “stunned,” if Washington and Oregon went to the Big Ten as it stands. Wilner stated the growing reality is that the two schools will have to make things work in the Pac-12, or leave and join the Big 12. The source to Wilner provided more information.
“I’d be stunned if Washington and Oregon go to the Big Ten,” Wilner’s source said. “The Big Ten will sit back for two years, then try to get Notre Dame.”
USC and UCLA both were announced as headed to the Big Ten on June 30, resulting in a massive response from schools all across the country as to what could be next. It was reported that Washington and Oregon were interested in going to the Big Ten next, which then started talks about what could come of the Pac-12. Expansion to the Big 12 was a step that could possibly come of that.
Arizona and Arizona State, as well as Utah and Colorado were four schools that came up as possible expansion candidates for the Big 12. But with those rumors flying quickly on social media, the schools quickly made public statements of support to their current league.
