The area’s third “hiring event” is scheduled for Thursday, the last planned for 2021 by a local economic development group.
The Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corp. and the city of Roswell are coordinating the event, which follows May 25 and Sept. 14 job fairs and an employer-only informational workshop on Oct. 21.
A mobile van from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions also is expected to be at today’s event, to occur from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Roswell Convention Center, 912 N. Main St.
City leaders are seeking to address the problem seen in many cities and areas of the nation, a shortage of employees compared to the types of open positions available.
Thirty businesses and organizations have signed up so far, said Irma Perez, business development manager for the local economic development group.

She said they include restaurants, hotels, the city of Roswell, Chaves County, state agencies, the Roswell Independent School District, Roswell Job Corps and Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.
All levels of job openings are expected to be available, Perez said, and the event will allow for on-site job interviews to occur.
She added that a New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions mobile van will be available for job seekers who want to research job openings, print out resumes or seek other assistance.
“If they need help with their resumes, they can help them with that,” said Perez, “or if (employers) only take online applications, they can help with that.”
Acting Workforce Solutions Secretary Rick Serna presented at the Oct. 21 employer workshop to provide updates about unemployment insurance claimants, strategies the agency is using for return-to-work activities, and data on job vacancies by industry, said Stacy Johnson, acting public information officer for the department. Representatives from the state’s Early Childhood Education Care Department and Human Services Department also presented to employers.
Johnson said the department “is coordinating across agencies to overcome barriers that prevent workers from re-joining the workforce. We then combine this effort with direct hiring events like the one taking place tomorrow.”
Perez said her organization has increased its promotion of the hiring event compared to the previous job fairs and that Workforce Solutions will be notifying area residents receiving unemployment benefits that they should attend the event.
The September job event attracted 150 job seekers and had 47 employer booths, Perez said, which she explained made it one of the largest in the state in 2021.
According to Local Area Unemployment Statistics posted on the Workforce Solutions website, the unemployment rate for Chaves County as of September was 5.9%, down from 6.3% in August and 8.5% in September 2020. In September 2021, about 1,722 people in the area were defined as unemployed, while 27,638 were employed.
The New Mexico unemployment rate for September was 5.8%, down from 6.3% for August and 8.6% for September 2020. The U.S. employment rate in September was 4.6%, compared to 5.3% in August and 7.7% in September 2020.
