Mark McGrath is the 'last douche' of the '90s - Page Six

When the ’90s were over, he was the “last douche” standing.

Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath is OK with being known as the “douche from the ’90s” and has even embraced the less-than-flattering nomenclature.

“It’s certainly a part of me (but) do I see myself that way? No way,” he told Page Six recently.

The “Fly” singer happily copped to having had some “unfortunate haircuts” and committing some “bad moves,” but is proud to be associated with a musical era that “we can really define.”

“I’m kind of stuck in this like vacuum of being the last douche, if you will,” he joked, quipping, “and there’s no been no douches to replace me. So I’m the go-to guy for that very thing.”

Despite his self-proclaimed reputation, McGrath has a sense of humor about himself and is grateful he’s been able to have a lasting music career.

“At the end of the day, we wrote four amazing songs that we still get to tour the world on today, not because of my hair, not because I took my shirt off, but because of those four amazing songs,” he explained. “So I’m very proud of the songs we wrote for sure.”

The 53-year-old singer also opened up about the debauchery that took place during the band’s heyday.

“Listen, I was in a rock and roll band and I gave myself a long leash to hang myself,” he explained. “And I went right to the end of that leash.”

He continued, “You know when you see a dog in a junkyard and they’re barking at something … like I got right to the end of that leash and was fortunate to bring it back. I was surrounded by good people.”

McGrath added that he never dabbled in heroin, which claimed other musicians of the era including Smashing Pumpkins’ Jonathan Melvoin and Hole’s Kristen Pfaff.

“It never appealed to me,” McGrath said. “I’m a guy who likes to get up to get down. You know what I’m saying? So I was able to navigate those murky waters.”

Sugar Ray scored a huge hit with “Fly”.

Besides consistently touring with Sugar Ray, McGrath has a new gig as the narrator for Vice TV’s documentary series “Dark Side of the ’90s.”

McGrath is uniquely qualified to host the series, noting that he was a regular at the Viper Room — a ubiquitous celeb haunt once co-owned by Johnny Depp and where River Phoenix died of a drug overdose.

He says that the show examines the underbelly of all things ’90s including “Baywatch” and Beanie Babies.

“They really take the time to deep dive in and they’re not afraid to look in the corners and the spooky shadows above what really happened,” he promised.
