The ongoing construction of a Google Fiber network in Orange County will run through Chapel Hill this week.
The Town of Chapel Hill announced Friday that construction is forcing the closure of the stretch of Church Street running between West Franklin and West Rosemary Streets, with the nearest detour being available on South Columbia Street.

The road will be closed from Monday, August 30 to Wednesday, September 8, according to the town. Work will occur Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s the latest in a busy series of construction projects for the Rosemary Street area, with the pedestrian bridge being demolished in July as part of the East Rosemary Street redevelopment project.
The Google Fiber construction previously forced the closure of intersections in Carrboro in November and has been ongoing through 2020 despite a brief stoppage during the pandemic. Construction initially began in December 2019, with the goal of bringing high-speed internet to local residents.
