Rep. Madison Cawthorn on Sunday warned there will be "bloodshed" if the "rigged" electoral system suffers from fraud in the future, despite officials' assurances that U.S. elections are secure.
The freshman Republican lawmaker from North Carolina , who attended former President Donald Trump 's "Stop the Steal" rally on Jan. 6 before rioters breached the U.S. Capitol in an effort to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 victory, suggested armed conflict could result if elections, which experts insist are not susceptible to fraud, continue to be "stolen."
“The things that we are wanting to fight for, it doesn’t matter if our votes don’t count,” Cawthorn told attendees of an event at the Macon County GOP headquarters in Franklin on Sunday evening. “Because, you know, if our election systems continue to be rigged and continue to be stolen, then it’s going to lead to one place — and it’s bloodshed.”
CAWTHORN SAYS FAUCI SHOULD BE PROSECUTED IF THE GOP TAKES BACK CONGRESS IN 2022
Before his comments, Cawthorn was seen holding a shotgun that he signed as part of a raffle conducted by the local Republican Party and suggested: "We all need to be storing up some ammunition."
“I will tell you, as much as I am willing to defend our liberty at all costs, there is nothing that I would dread doing more than having to pick up arms against a fellow American," Cawthorn said to an applauding crowd, adding, "The way that we can have recourse against that is if we all passionately demand that we have election security in all 50 states."
Luke Ball, a spokesman for the North Carolina congressman, said in a statement Monday that Cawthorn was “in no way supporting or advocating for any form of violence.”
“In his comments, Congressman Cawthorn is clearly advocating for violence not to occur over election integrity questions,” Ball said, according to multiple outlets. “He fears others would erroneously choose that route and strongly states that election integrity issues should be resolved peacefully and never through violence.”
Since winning his 2020 bid for Congress, Cawthorn has parroted Trump's policy points and complaints regarding the presidential election, which the former president alleged was riddled with widespread fraud despite his administration's Justice Department saying in December there was no evidence that fraud swung the election in favor of Biden. The Trump campaign filed several lawsuits alleging fraud in the months following the election, the majority of which were tossed by federal courts.

The video of Cawthorn's remarks was reportedly posted on the Macon County GOP's Facebook page but was not visible to the public as of Tuesday morning. The footage was circulated on Twitter by a Democratic congressional staffer, according to the Washington Post.
The Washington Examiner contacted Ball but did not immediately receive a response.
