Northland COVID-19 cases more than double from last week - Pine Journal

Between July 16 and 22, 82 positive cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the Northland. This is more than double last week's total of 35 cases, and the highest weekly total since June 11-17. Cases across the state have been increasing recently as the delta variant of the COVID-19 virus spreads.

The Northland also recorded four deaths in the past week, with two in Itasca County and one each in Carlton and St. Louis counties.

New cases in Northland counties July 16-22:

  • Aitkin — 2.
  • Carlton — 12.
  • Cook — 1.
  • Itasca — 7.
  • Koochiching — 5.
  • Lake — 5.
  • St. Louis — 38.
  • Ashland — 1.
  • Bayfield — 4.
  • Douglas — 7.

St. Louis County

Of the 82 new cases in the Northland this week, 38 were in St. Louis County. Last week, there were 20 cases.

New cases in St. Louis County cities July 16-22, according to St. Louis County Public Health:

  • Duluth — 19.
  • Hibbing — 9.
  • Chisholm — 5.
  • Brookston — 4.
  • Cotton, Virginia — 3 each.
  • Aurora, Buyck, Embarrass — 2 each.
  • Alborn, Floodwood, Hoyt Lakes, Mountain Iron, Orr, Proctor — 1 each.

As of Thursday, the county's seven-day testing positivity rate was 1.6%, up a half-percent from last week. The county conducted 2,363 tests July 16-22.

Carlton County

Carlton County logged 12 new cases of COVID-19 in the last week. Those new cases came from 576 tests, putting this week's testing positivity rate at 2.1%, up 0.6% from last week.

New cases in Carlton County ZIP codes July 16-22, according to Minnesota Department of Health data collected by ZIP code:

  • Cloquet — 10.
  • Carlton — 3.
  • Cromwell, Wrenshall — 1 each.

Lake County had the highest percent positive rate of Minnesota's seven Northland counties this week, with 4% positive cases out of 126 tests. The county recorded five positive cases from those tests. Positive tests increased 2.5% from last week.

An additional 1,473 Northlanders became fully vaccinated July 16-22. The region's population is now 53% fully vaccinated, and 56% of Northlanders have had at least one dose.
