The largest wildfire in the United States continued to burn in southern Oregon on Thursday, but weak winds and high humidity helped firefighters. In Northern California, a fire spread to neighboring Nevada.

Oregon’s Bootleg Fire has expanded to 1,616 square kilometers (624 square miles), but the fire brigade is reported to have improved the fire department.

The fire was also approaching the area burned down in the previous fire, expecting authorities to prevent fuel shortages from spreading.

“Fire brigades and support personnel have made great strides in containing the fire in the last few days,” said Joe Plummer, an incident commander trainee for Incident Management Team 2 in the Pacific Northwest, in a statement. Stated. “But there is still a long way to go before us to keep the surrounding communities safe.”

In Oregon, 2,000 homes were ordered to evacuate and 5,000 were still under threat, according to the Associated Press. No deaths from fire have been reported.

Smoke and ash reportedly affected air quality far away from the east coast.

The Oregon fire started with a lightning strike.

In California, a Tamarak fire south of Lake Tahoe burned 176 square kilometers (68 square miles) and crossed the state border into Nevada.

California utility Pacific Gas & Electric has announced plans to bury 10,000 miles of power lines to prevent fires caused by falling trees.

The cost of filling 10% of a company’s power lines can be between $ 15 billion and $ 30 billion. The cost was expected to be passed on to PG & E’s customers, who are already paying for the highest electricity prices in the country.

The announcement was made after the company stated that a tree rush into the power line could have caused a major fire.

Inadequate PG & E equipment was accused of catastrophic fires in 2017 and 2019, leading to the company’s bankruptcy filing in 2019.

Since breaking out of bankruptcy, the company has faced criticism that it hasn’t addressed the problem of trees near power lines and has promised to fix it.

Some information in this report comes from the Associated Press.
