WHY RAIDERS COULD WIN: The Raiders still have a small chance to make the postseason. They’ll have to beat Miami and then Denver next week, then hope the Dolphins lose next week and the Ravens lose their final two games. … Derek Carr is set to return from a groin injury that knocked him out of the Raiders’ Thursday night loss to the Chargers last week. Carr could be extra motivated since his backup, Marcus Mariota, was impressive in his debut and it led to some to speculate the team would be better off having Mariota start this week. … In his second game as interim defensive coordinator, perhaps Rod Marinelli can devise a way to get more pressure on the quarterback? Or at least find a way to slow down the Dolphins offense? … New Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs could do some damage against the Dolphins’ 19th-ranked rush defense.
WHY DOLPHINS COULD WIN: Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been effective as a dual threat as he’s won five of his seven starts. The left-hander has completed 64 percent of his passes for nine touchdowns and just two interceptions for a 92.5 passer rating. He’s also run for three touchdowns. … Miami’s defense could cause some issues for the Raiders. The Dolphins gave up a league-worse 30.9 points per game last year but are now the NFL’s best while permitting just 18.4 points. Xavien Howard leads the NFL with nine interceptions as Miami’s pass defense has improved since giving up a league-worst 39 TD passes last year. The Dolphins have allowed just 16 TD passes this year.
RAIDERS NEXT GAME: vs. Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High, on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
