Bucks County continues to see record levels of COVID-19 cases.
The Bucks County Department of Health warned Monday night that COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations were rising at rates faster than in recent months.
Last week, Bucks County health officials received word of 23 COVID-19 deaths. Those who died – nine men and 14 women – ranged from ages 42 to 95.
“It was the most coronavirus fatalities reported in one week since the end of May,” officials said.
As of Monday night, there were 69 Bucks Countians in hospitals with COVID-19, 13 were in intensive care units, and six were on ventilators.
Bucks County reported 2,417 new COVID-19 infections last week. Last Wednesday, Bucks County saw a record high of 584 COVID-19 cases.
Last week, Bucks County had a 12.1 percent COVID-19 test positivity rate, which was slightly higher than the state average. A 5 percent positivity rate has been considered very concerning.
Since the first week of September, Bucks County has seen a 890 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
There is worry COVID-19 will continue to rise as people gather for the holidays. The state and county have seen numerous cases from people who caught the virus from friends and family during unmasked encounters.
“We are hoping that many people used their common sense over the holiday weekend to stay home and reduce any gatherings,” Bucks County Health Department Director Dr. David Damsker said in a statement. “Keep in mind that given the high case numbers, anybody you know can be potentially infected. If you have symptoms, don’t go to work or school or visit family – get tested. That’s also going to help a lot at this point.”
In recent weeks, the overwhelmed Bucks County Health Department has moved to using state data and focusing contact tracing efforts on “high-priority cases such as elderly and school-age patients,” officials said.
Over the past week, the county health department identified 46 COVID-19 cases among residents and staff at long-term care centers, which made up the bulk of the county’s spring deaths.
“At least 112 Bucks County school students tested positive for COVID last week, 89 of whom were enrolled in virtual or hybrid instruction. Six school staff members also tested positive,” officials said.
Since the pandemic began, Bucks County has seen 16,702 confirmed cases, 1,031 probable cases, and 679 deaths.
Ways residents can help reduce the spread of COVID-19:
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Wear a mask when in a business or where it is difficult to maintain proper social distancing.
- Cover any coughs or sneezes with your elbow, not your hands.
- Clean surfaces frequently.
- Stay home to avoid spreading COVID-19, especially if you are unwell.
