Daylight saving time comes to an end this weekend as we turn those clocks back by one hour.
The conversation on whether or not we should adjust the clocks pops up this time every year. Whether or not we should remains up for debate, but the reality is we turn the clocks back one hour this weekend, which means our sunrise and sunset times will be adjusted by one hour.
One hour doesn't seem like a big difference, but it could make the difference on whether or not your evening commute on Monday is in the dark.
Let's take a closer look at how the time change affects our local sunrise and sunset times.
Halloween is the last day under daylight saving time and the sunrise for Tampa is at 7:40 a.m. and the sunset is 6:45 p.m. This means some students are waiting for the bus stop in the dark while many have a commute home from work in the daylight.
On November 1, daylight saving time ends and standard time begins. This means the sunrise and sunset will shift by one hour. The sunrise in Tampa will take place at 6:41 p.m. and the sunset will be at 5:41 p.m.
Now those same students who were waiting for the bus in the dark are now waiting for the bus in the daylight. It also means those commuting home from work around 6 p.m. Monday afternoon will do so in the dark.
In fact, the sunrise on Halloween is one of the latest sunrises in Tampa for the entire year! Imagine if we didn't turn the clocks back by one hour. The sunrise on December 15 wouldn't occur until 8:13 a.m! Imagine that for a sunrise?
The length of daylight has nothing to do with the time change and we will continue losing minutes of daylight each week until we reach the winter solstice in December when Tampa receives just over ten hours of sunlight.
Don't forget to use the time change as a reminder to change out the batteries inside the smoke detectors.
