TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - As temps go up, so does your risk of heat-related illnesses. The sunny weather has a lot of kids ready to enjoy some outdoor activities.
As temperatures heat up, parents are making sure their kids are staying hydrated.
“The heat just takes everything out of you, all the energy,” one parent at Gage Park, Lisa Bond said. “We made sure we brought plenty of drinks and we had drinks when were walking around the zoo and pushing water as much as possible.”
While kids are active, the heat can slow things down for some.
“As active as they are it really kind of sucks their activities, kind of sucks the energy right out of them, so it’s good to get back in that cool weather,” Bond added.
During this time, it’s best to watch your kids closely for signs they’re slowing down too much.
“If they start complaining or maybe being sluggish, maybe their getting a little too hot, bring them inside at that point,” one parent at Rossville Pool, Josh Phelps said. “If they stop sweating, that’s definitely a indication that maybe their getting too hot or maybe a little bit dehydrated.”
Alan Stahl with the Topeka Fire Department says everyone should be cautious in the heat.
“If you’re not drinking enough water, you can get things, the first sign is a heat cramp. any outdoor activities during this type of weather, this heat, this humidity can cause heat-related stress, whether that be heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke,” Stahl explained. “People need to be mindful of what the activities they’re doing and how much water they’re drinking.”
Stahl says be careful walking your pets, too, “if you can’t put your bare hand on the concrete and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds, it’s really awful hot for your dog or cats to be on that.
“So we want people to take seriously this heat and these temperatures,” Stahl emphasized.
Stahl also says if you see anyone experiencing heat related illness, call 911, get them to a shaded area if possible and start to give them water.
