Nets don't want repeat of their last post-break disaster - New York Post

The Nets have some momentum going into the All-Star break. Now they’d better hope it goes better for them than Christmas break did.

“[Coach Kenny Atkinson] is wary of another break because of how we came out of Christmas, which was terrible,” said Spencer Dinwiddie, who said they learned some vital lessons from that nosedive. “We hope not to do that again, learn from our mistakes.

“Don’t drink too much eggnog. If you’re on All-Star break and you’re in Chicago, don’t party too crazy, Joe Harris.”

Dinwiddie will be at All-Star Weekend for the Skills Challenge and Harris to defend his 3-point title. The others will get time off, but the key is not to let rest turn into rust.

“The biggest thing is making sure some guys recover but also some guys getting enough work over the break,” Harris said.

“Last time we had a few days off, we turned around and were 3–13. So a lot of guys are still trying to stay locked-in. Take advantage of the time off that we have, rest, recuperate, get our bodies right and make sure we finish off this second half of the year strong.”

When the Nets enjoyed four days off for the holidays, they enjoyed them too much. They proceeded to lose seven straight and 12 of their next 14.

This time they have an entire week off before playing again Feb. 20 at Philadelphia.

“We probably shouldn’t do what we did last time during that stretch. But you learn from things, learn from experiences. That obviously was a negative time for us,” DeAndre Jordan said with a rueful grimace.

“We know what we need to do to keep our bodies used to the loading but also being able to get some rest too. We learned from that experience. We also have some veteran guys here who know how to deal with that time off.”

So what exactly did they learn?

“Enjoy the break, but when we come back we have work to do,” Jarrett Allen said. “If we want to get to where we need to be and where we want to be, we need to be locked-in.

“Enjoy the vacation, but don’t forget that we still have a job to do, we still have games to play when we come back, be ready for that.”

When they come back, they’ll have to be ready to play 10 of their next 14 on the road. Allen, 21, said he’s wiser than he used to be in handling layoffs.

“I know what I have to do to keep my body ready. I know I have to still keep in shape, do a little treadmill work, do a little shooting,” he said. “My rookie year I was like, ‘This is time to lay back,’ ” he said. “I came back, I was out of breath the first practice. Now I know what I need to do.”
