John Oliver Kicks Off New Season of Last Week Tonight With Thorough Endorsement of Medicare For All - Vanity Fair

It’s been a while since one of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight monologues went viral, but we’ve never been in the middle of a presidential campaign when Medicare For All was the central pledge of a frontrunner.

The British-born comedian (who is, in fact, an American citizen, in case anyone out there still thinks that’s a requirement to make jests about our way of life) kicked off his seventh season on Sunday with a 20-minute examination of the health care industry, its critics and those who seek to block any reform.

He began with concessions to those on the anti-M4A side of the debate. Yes, Sebastian Gorka is correct when he cites American hospitals as being the best that’s available to anyone who is rich and famous, but he did add that a great many people are born with a preexisting condition of “not being Beyoncé.” By the end of the segment he made a strong case for the new National Anthem being “everyone in a stadium yelling about their insurance company for two-and-a-half-minutes.”

Oliver took the three principal counter-arguments to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s plans, “cost,” “wait times,” and “choice,” and, with an effective blend of self-deprecating zingers, graphs, and carefully selected Fox News soundbites made his case for the United States’s ability to do what Canada and the United Kingdom are already doing.

For every heartbreaking look at a failed GoFundMe campaign there’s something ludicrous, like the example of Utah public employees traveling to Tijuana to get their prescriptions filled. It’s enough to make you reach for an over-the-counter antacid tablet, I tell ya.

Oliver's segment gained traction on Monday, a Federal holiday, especially the section raising an eyebrow at Pete Buttigieg's plan of "medicare for all who want it," calling it a "slightly smaller shit sandwich with guac." The variant on the old This Is Spinal Tap gag had considerable impact, especially considering that Oliver has been somewhat critical of Bernie Sanders in the past.

As with any good viral clip, not all were on board.
