Free agency is in full swing, and things are about to get interesting as next week’s Winter Meetings draw closer.
The phones will be ringing and the front office executives behind each MLB team will be as busy as they have ever been, doing what they can to add some pieces to their respective ballclubs.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale of USA Today made an interesting prediction.
With Willson Contreras as one of the top free agents on the market, the Chicago Cubs are looking at Christian Vazquez, who just won a World Series with the Houston Astros, as a potential replacement.
Meanwhile, the Astros appear to be in on Contreras as they look to beef up their roster and make another World Series run in 2023.
It could turn out to be an intriguing free agent swap of catchers this winter:

Potential Catcher Swap Coming?
This could be an interesting swap.
Obviously, both catchers are free agents, and it would not be like a typical trade.
But Vazquez could be a good fit in Chicago, and he would come at a much cheaper price than Contreras would.
The Astros do appear to be engaged in the sweepstakes for the 2016 World Series champion.
Adding him to a lineup that already features Jose Abreu, Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Jeremy Pena would make Houston instant favorites to return to the Fall Classic next season, as they grow even stronger.
Vazquez hit .274 with nine home runs during the regular season.
So while he wouldn’t provide the same type of power as Contreras, he could still be a valuable piece to the Cubs offense and would be an upgrade defensively for the North Siders.
