Massachusetts drivers struck more animals over the last year, according to new data on animal collision auto insurance claims as wildlife officials remind motorists that the Bay State is entering peak deer accident season.
During the 12-month period between July 2021 and June 2022, more than 44,000 animal collision claims were filed across the state, according to an annual analysis by State Farm. That was up compared to the previous year study when 42,500 animal collisions were estimated for Massachusetts.
This new data comes out amid peak deer collision season, as most animal-related crashes occur from October to December with November being the top month. While most collisions are with darting deer, many other animals get struck by vehicles, including dogs, rodents and raccoons.
During the next few months, Massachusetts drivers should be particularly careful in the morning around sunrise and while driving at dusk during sunset, Martin Feehan of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife told the Herald on Tuesday. Deer are most active during those times.
“As we’re approaching the rut breeding season, deer are moving a lot more and deer activity is picking up,” added Feehan, deer and moose project leader with MassWildlife.
“It’s really important that folks take their time and slow down,” he added of drivers, especially on country highways and roads that border forests and woods.
Some people might see a deer on the side of the road and think it’s safe to drive, but that deer could still dart out into the road, Feehan warned.
“Slow down if you see any sign of a deer,” he said.
Massachusetts drivers rank 17th in the nation for the number of animal collisions claims. Pennsylvania is again the top state with more than 155,000 estimated auto insurance claims.
Nationally, the insurance industry paid for an estimated 1.9 million animal collisions during the 12-month period between July 2021 and June 2022. That is a 5.5% decrease compared to the previous year.
