To accommodate state-required procedures for Virginia Tech Power Plant’s natural gas boiler capital project, performance testing of the new boiler is scheduled to take place Monday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Oct. 28. Testing operations will be limited to the hours between 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.
If unseasonably warm conditions occur during this scheduled timeframe, it may be necessary for the power plant to vent steam produced by the new boiler. This may produce water vapor that, depending upon environmental conditions, may appear to look like white smoke. If venting operations are necessary, there will likely be elevated noise levels in the area immediately surrounding the power plant as steam is released to the atmosphere.
There are no immediate plans to vent steam during this period unless weather conditions dictate the need to do so.
