Hit-and-run crashes seem to be taking place with greater frequency in many Downriver communities recently, but nowhere was that more evident than in Wyandotte, which recorded six such incidents in one weekend.
Two people were arrested in unrelated incidents, including a juvenile.
The first case involving an arrest took place shortly after 11 p.m. Jan. 22 when officers were dispatched to the area of Fort Street and Goddard Road where a hit-and-run accident had just occurred. Police were told that the suspect, driving a Chevrolet Cobalt, was fleeing the scene.
A Wyandotte officer was behind the suspect vehicle within seconds of the call. When the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled at a high rate of speed on westbound Goddard, from Fort Street.
Police said the suspect turned into a Southgate neighborhood, continuing to drive recklessly. The officers disengaged the pursuit, instead forming a perimeter to prevent his escape.
Moments later, a Wyandotte officer observed the car speeding toward Goddard Road, in an attempt to break the perimeter. However, the officer blocked the car’s path, which stopped the 17-year-old Ecorse man in his tracks.
The incident was highlighted in the Wyandotte Police Department’s Facebook page.
“We tried to stop him for leaving the scene of an accident,” the post stated. “He quickly escalated what would have been a simple misdemeanor charge into a felony.”
Deputy Police Chief Archie Hamilton said charges will be sought with the juvenile court.
“The actions by all the officers involved were extremely impressive,” Hamilton said. “The officers were able to quickly establish a strategy to reduce the threat to all the unsuspecting motorists on the roadway, protect the driver from his own reckless actions, and make the apprehension.”
The second incident that resulted in an arrest took place at around 3:20 a.m. Jan. 23, when police were sent to the area of 14th Street and Eureka Road to check on a vehicle that struck a light pole.
The suspect vehicle, a Ford Flex, fled the scene after the collision. However, the crash resulted in the driver’s vehicle leaking fluid all over the road, which led officers to the banged-up vehicle, parked near the suspect’s house.
Through the identification of evidence and interviewing witnesses, police found the suspect in a house “in a nearby city.”
A 38-year-old Wyandotte man was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
