MANISTEE — The Manistee Community Band closed out its summer concert season with a performance Tuesday evening in Manistee.
The concert, titled “Sweet Sounds of Summer” featured a broad musical selection including a medley of patriotic songs, a saxophone concerto and music from Disney’s The Lion King -- all set against the Lake Michigan shoreline at First Street Beach.
Conductor Ryan Biller said the concert was the culmination of months of hard work.
“We’ve been rehearsing all summer,” Biller said, “This was kind of the last hurrah.”
The community band previously performed last month at Mineral Springs Park in Frankfort.
Jacob Bissonnette of Flushing MI was a featured performer on saxophone.
The concerts were free to attend but the community band collected donations.
“Between the Frankfurt concert and the Manistee concert, I think we're gonna be set (financially) for the first part of next year,” Biller said. “We have a lot of community donors, and they really help us a lot. Right when we’re starting at the beginning of summer they help us purchase music … I’m very appreciative that a lot of community businesses donate and help us get through the summer as well.”
While this year’s concert season might be over for the community band, Biller said a third date may be added for next summer.
“We’re hopefully going to have three concerts — one in Frankfort, one in Manistee and then one somewhere in the Ludington-area, because we have members of the band in all three counties,” he said.
The community band has nearly doubled in size since last summer, with around 55 members, according to Biller.
However, Biller said he is still looking for more music-minded performers to join the band ahead of next year’s performances. Those interested are encouraged to like the band on Facebook, click on the “groups” tab, then the “join groups” button next to the community band.
Biller is also looking to form a community choir next year.
“So if you’re a singer and you’re interested, you can join the vocal group,” he said.
Those interested in joining the vocal group can follow the same steps as above, and click the “join groups” button next to the Manistee Community Band Chorus option.
People can also apply by dialing 231-299-5493 or by emailing Biller at ryanbiller6202@gmail.com.
