The National Weather Service has said it was a tornado that touched down in Jefferson County last night.

The weather service sent a storm survey team to assess the damage in the southern part of the county, and it has found preliminary evidence that an EF-0 tornado caused it. The surveyors estimated it had top winds of 75 mph.

More details will likely be coming later today:

Radar showed a brief tornado touched down east of Bessemer and south of Highway 150 in southern Jefferson County just after 1 a.m.

The weather service sent out a survey team to look at the Shades Crest and Highway 150 areas, where they have received some reports of downed trees.

Some of those trees fell on homes, according to a report to the weather service.

Forecasters asked those in southern Jefferson County to contact the weather service if they have any storm damage.

There was no warning issued for the storm at the time, but radar indicated a tornado debris signature in the area as a complex of rain and storms moved through central Alabama early this morning.

The weather service and Storm Prediction Center had warned that brief tornadoes would be possible with overnight storms, although the risk was low. Those kind of tornadoes can form quickly and dissipate just as fast.

No other severe storms were reported in Alabama overnight, but winds in the wake of last night’s rain are being blamed for knocking down numerous trees across Marshall County overnight, according to a report to the weather service in Huntsville.
