... moreBIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids athletic director Dawn Thompson is as disappointed as coaches and players with the winter sports season having been delayed.
But like many of the others, she’s confident there’s going to be some type of winter sports season.
The season was put on hold for three weeks on Nov. 18 and was slated to end last week. The state government suspended it by another 12 days.
“We were not surprised by the extension of the pause,” Thompson said. “We remain hopeful that a winter season will happen at some point in the future.”
Student-athletes, however, have not been allowed to have formal workouts since the pause started.
“Our concern is the mental, emotional, and physical health that the pause is having on our student-athletes,” Thompson said. “We continue to engage with them the best we can virtually, but it certainly doesn't take the place of in person activities.”
The MSHAA meets on Dec. 16 and is expected to announce a winter calendar at that time.
“It's likely the winter season will be shortened and extended into March,” Thompson said. “My hope is that it does not interfere greatly with the spring season as those athletes lost their entire season last year.”
Her coaches, Thompson said, are staying active.
“Our coaches are continuing to reach out via zoom, google hangout, etc.,” Thompson said. “We are encouraging them to complete their school work first and to find a way to stay active.
“The teams that started the season are communicating with each other a couple times a week. Those who were unable to start are using social media, texting, etc. to encourage students to stay active and prepare for tryouts.”
The hockey team had two weeks of practice and the girls basketball team had one. The others were set to start before the pause began.
“I am confident we will have some type of winter season, but we will need to wait to see what that will look like per the MHSAA,” Thompson said.
