The second coyote attack in the Lamorinda area in less than two weeks sent a person to the hospital with bite wounds Tuesday night, authorities said.
The person was expected to recover from the attack, which happened in a small shopping center in the 3600 block of Mt. Diablo Boulevard shortly after 7 p.m., according to both the Contra Costa County Animal Services and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“His bite wounds were not nearly as bad as the wounds suffered by the previous victim,” Fish and Wildlife spokesman Patrick Foy said.
That victim was bitten Dec. 4 while running at Campolindo High School in Moraga. A subsequent forensic DNA analysis from swabs taken by Fish and Wildlife personnel from that victim’s pants showed that the coyote who bit him was the same one that bit a boy about 1½ miles south of Moraga Commons Park on July 9, Foy said.
Fish and Wildlife personnel took a Q-tip swab of the bite wounds from Tuesday’s victim, and Foy said they will try to extract traces of DNA from the saliva.
Contra Costa Animal Services spokesman Steve Burdo said personnel from that agency also took a rabies swab.
