CLEVELAND, Ohio – The last remaining mill on the Cuyahoga River stands on the Columbus Peninsula, tall circular silos of grain just down river from the Cleveland Rowing Foundation on the east bank of the Flats.
Parts of the mill has been standing since the late 1800s. But it will cease production this summer.
Grain Craft, which bought the mill from Cereal Food Processors in 2014, said the decision was made “following strategic attempts to address both challenging market dynamics and long-term supply chain obstacles.”
“The Cleveland mill will long remain a significant piece of flour milling history,” said a Grain Craft news release. An original buhr stone from 1856 remains on site.
The mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as a part of the Cleveland Centre Historic District recognized for its transportation, commercial, and light industrial history.
The site includes the origination point of the Ohio & Erie Canal and railroad lines dating back to the 1850s, as well as bridges connecting the river’s east and west banks.
Says the register: “The area has a mix of late-19th to mid-20t century buildings, most of modest scale and design reflecting the utilitarian character of the area.”
The area also includes the Flats Industrial Railroad, which regularly transports the mill’s grain.
The mill is one of the last remnants of the Flats’ heyday of “iron furnaces, rolling mills, foundries, lumberyards, shipyards, flour mills, oil refineries, paint and chemical factories, and other industries,” according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.
The industries used the river, Lake Erie and railroads to ship their products.
The Cleveland mill primarily grinds hard winter and spring wheat, with a daily capacity of about 8,500 cwts (476 tons) – less than 6 percent of the company’s total capacity.
“The decision to close our Cleveland mill was difficult,” said Pete Frederick, President of Grain Craft. “Our team at Cleveland is a group of dedicated professionals who have been loyal to our company. We are committed to supporting each of the employees and the families who have been affected by this decision.”
Grain Craft is providing financial assistance and outplacement services for employees during this transition.
