Fore at last, fore at last: Golf returns to Bay State - Boston Herald

tampilansberita.blogspot.com

“Golf” has become a fore-letter word during the coronavirus pandemic.

Astoundingly, it is no longer a crime in Massachusetts.

Tom Brady left the Bay State to tee it up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his old playing partner Rob Gronkowski. But Before Brady & Gronk start the 2020 NFL season at New Orleans, Brady will be playing 18 holes with Phil Mickelson against Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning on Sunday, May 24, in part to raise $10 million-and-counting for various COVID-19-related charities.

The Match II – or as it is officially known, “The Match: Champions for Charity” – will take place at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, without spectators but within social distancing guidelines. It will air live on TNT and other Warner Media platforms at 3 p.m.

Expect lots of PG-rated trash-talk two weeks from Sunday. There will be no f-bombs, if the TNT audio engineers can help it.

While much of Florida has avoided COVID-19’s visceral wrath, Brady has stumbled while quarantined in the Sunshine State. He was scolded by Tampa’s mayor for an illicit outdoor workout and he pulled off an unarmed home invasion while looking for his QB coach.

As far as golf goes, social justice warriors and social media scientists have feverishly cast the urge to spoil a good walk as an endorsement of septuagenarian euthanasia.

18 holes? No, 18 graves!

Your 5-iron will kill my grandmother.

That’s no golf cart, it’s a hearse.

Golf can be a killer game during the best of times.

It was considered damn near fatal in the Bay State until Thursday.

Whatever science or medically driven data that led Gov. Charlie Baker to shut down courses from Woods Hole Golf Club to the Wahconah Country Club suddenly disappeared overnight.

Wednesday: Golf is an illegal health hazard.

Thursday: Play 36 if you can before it snows.

You figure it out.

Perhaps Gov. Baker has a disdain for duffers and wants to scratch them from the voter rolls?

Regardless, you can now play golf in Massachusetts on any of the 8.4 spring-like days left this year and you will no longer be considered a criminal accomplice in spreading this hellish virus.

Imagine this: Playing and watching golf on the same day during a holiday weekend.

Don’t you dare smile!

No matter your opinions about golf, the people who run golf courses and their related businesses are worthy of being free to earn a living. An abundance of common sense and a lack of medical science to the contrary demanded it.

Gov. Baker’s benevolence toward bunkers and those who land in them came on the same day we learned that the Tiger-Phil-Tom-Peyton match was official.

This hyper-competitive, forty-something foursome will be battling Father Time, themselves and each other’s egos.

You’d better hit it hard, long and straight.

We’ll take it. Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally a sports apex. Fans and bettors choose from among NHL and NBA playoff games, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the PGA Tour, pro tennis, the WNBA, the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. This Memorial Day Sunday offers U.S. sports fans just Brady & Friends and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600.

“The tournament had to be in Florida,” Manning deadpanned during a promotional video. “After Tom’s B&E arrest, with an ankle monitor, he couldn’t leave the state. It had to be in Florida. Tiger and I talked to the sheriff in Tampa. Tom is going to be allowed to go to Palm Beach and play. I’ve never played Tom well on his home turf. This is considered a neutral site. I would have loved to had this tournament in a place where they don’t like Tom very much. Indianapolis. Denver. Boston, after he betrayed them and broke their hearts.”

Manning The Doofus is as clueless as ever. There’s no sense of betrayal among Bradyphiles. The Patriots never made him a serious offer. New England GM Nike Belichick was on to Jarrett Stidham.

Mickelson was a heavy betting underdog in original “The Match” but won it on the 22nd hole during a makeshift playoff in Las Vegas. This time, he and Brady are -200 underdogs, while Tiger and Manning are +170.

Different formats on the front and back nine should prevent any sort of a convoluted ending. Given the paucity of sports available for the viewing and betting public, the TV ratings, social media footprint and betting handles on this “Match” should be astronomical.

While we’re all trying to figure a way forward, “The Match: Champions for Charity” offers a reminder of the redemption available for us all. It comes nearly three years to the day after Woods was pinched for DUI on Memorial Day 2017 near his home in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Medalist Golf Club is a 20-minute drive from the spot of Woods’ arrest at 2999 Indian Creek Parkway in Jupiter. Since the Mug Shot Seen Round the World, Woods completed a pre-trial diversion program, continued wrestling with multiple back issues, tied Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour victories, won his fifth Masters and pocketed up the Presidential Medal Of Freedom.

It’s been an amazing revival for Tiger. But it will pale in size and scope to the comeback awaiting all of us.

Even if we first take some time to enjoy a round of golf.
