Passenger traffic at Portland International Airport fell sharply last week, dropping 10% amid the coronavirus outbreak as airlines continue ratcheting back flights.
“The economic impact is going to be big. We have a high level of uncertainty and it’s rapidly changing,” said chief Dan Pippenger, chief operations officer of the Port of Portland, which runs PDX. He spoke at the port commission’s meeting Wednesday.
Last week was the first full week after coronavirus cases were identified in Oregon.
Delta Air Lines said Monday it will cancel flights between Portland and Tokyo through May 31, after having earlier ratcheted those back from daily to three days a week.
United Airlines has canceled four of the 20 routes it flies in Portland and discount carrier Sun Country Airlines said it won’t fly between Portland and the tourist destinations of Honolulu, Las Vegas and San Francisco this summer.
“We do anticipate more reductions in flight schedules, though it’s uncertain when that will happen,” Pippenger said.
The port declined to provide passenger volume numbers because it said those are collected confidentially by the Transportation Security Administration. But the port said a little more than 31,000 vehicles used its parking lots last week, down 14% from the same week in 2019.
Use of the long-term lot was down about 8.5% while the short-term lot -- favored by business travelers -- was down 18.2%.
The port anticipates less revenue as a result of flight reductions, according to Pippenger. He said the port is beginning to explore ways to reduce costs but didn’t specify what those will be.
