An asteroid - a big one estimated to be between 1.1 and 2.5 miles wide - will fly by Earth on April 29, reports CNN. Thankfully, according to NASA, it won’t hit earth.
CNN quotes NASA as saying upon discovering the asteroid in 1998, if it did hit Earth, it is “large enough to cause global effects.”
The asteroid, called 52768 (1998 OR2), will travel by our planet at a rate of 19,461 miles per hour, passing within 3,908,791 miles of Earth, says CNN.
When will the flyby occur?
As reported by CNN, and according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, the flyby is expected to occur at 4:56 a.m. ET, on Wednesday, April 29. The Center tracks Near-Earth Objects that could collide with Earth.
Although the asteroid was classified as a potentially hazardous object because it passes near earth’s orbit, according to CNN, it’s currently not on NASA’s list of potential future Earth impact events, which are gathered and monitored by NASA’s Sentry System.
The Sentry System is “a highly automated collision monitoring system that continually scans the most current asteroid catalog for possibilities of future impact with Earth over the next 100 years.”
CNN reports that it’s not the largest-ever asteroid to pass near the Earth, but it will be the largest to fly by within the next two months.
