At his first Northern California public appearance of the 2020 campaign — less than nine hours before the polls closed in the state — former Vice President Joe Biden said he believes he will do better than expected on Super Tuesday.
“I know a lot of folks have already voted, but I feel good,” Biden told supporters and reporters who filled the Buttercup Diner in Oakland. “I think we’re going to do fine.
“My hopes are high,” Biden said. “I think we’re going to do well on Super Tuesday.”
After the brief stopover, Biden headed to Los Angeles for an event with his wife, Jill, in the evening to close out Super Tuesday when 14 states, including California, are casting ballots.
He wasn’t the only member of his family traveling through California. Biden’s sister and longtime adviser, Valerie Biden Owens, was scheduled to attend a canvass launch Tuesday afternoon in San Fernando (Los Angeles County).

Biden needs the help. He trailed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in California with only 8% of the support among likely Democratic voters in a Berkeley IGS Poll released last week, although other polls put him somewhat higher.
Candidates need to reach 15% of the statewide vote to qualify for the 144 delegates awarded on a statewide basis. Another 271 are awarded by congressional districts to candidates who have won at least 15% of the vote in a district.
At his Oakland appearance, Biden said, “I think we’ll qualify (for delegates) here, beat the threshold, and I think we’re doing to win a number of states as well.”
The Berkeley IGS Poll was taken before former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and endorsed Biden on Monday. Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, another ex-candidate, also endorsed Biden.
Biden’s late California blitz is odd considering that he spent little time campaigning here and held only one large public rally in the state — in November in Los Angeles. Most of his other visits were for high-dollar fundraisers, including at Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Pacific Heights home in October.
Biden avoided other opportunities to appear in more public settings in California over the past year, even in front of fellow Democrats. He skipped the California Democratic Party convention in San Francisco last spring that attracted 14 candidates. He also didn’t attend a party gathering in the city in August that all the other top candidates attended.
Francisco Nieto was one of the diners with whom Biden briefly chatted during the 45 minutes he spent at the Buttercup on Broadway. Nieto, a retired business manager for an East Bay carpenters union, said he had already voted for Biden.
“Bernie is a nice guy, but he’s too far left,” Nieto said.
State Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, a Biden endorser who was at the restaurant, said, “This type of retail politics is Joe Biden at his best because he connects with people. He’s a regular guy.
“I think he’s going to do extraordinarily well, given the lack of resources he was able to put in the state,” Glazer said. “You know how it expensive it is here.”
