Transmission of the coronavirus could last in the city until September, the Big Apple’s health czar said Monday.
“September may be the end of transmission,” although that’s just the “best guess,” said city Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot at a press conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We have no idea how long transmission may [last].
“There’s no indication how long ongoing transmission will persist,” Barbot said, adding, “It’s inevitable that we will have more cases.”
The health chief said new details about the virus are constantly coming out — including how it is transmitted.
“It’s not just prolonged household contact, as we initially thought,” Barbot said. “Initially, we thought that travel was the main risk factor. We now know that’s no longer the case.”
Many of New York’s current 142 cases, including 20 in the city, are from community contact, officials say.
