Amazon: Staten Island Last-Mile facility to create hundreds of jobs - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- After creating 4,500 full-time jobs at its fulfillment center in Bloomfield, Amazon says it will create “hundreds" of employment opportunities next door at its Last-Mile facility, opening later this year.

Amazon’s new 450,000-square-foot warehouse, recently leased in Staten Island’s West Shore Matrix Global Logistics Park, will be used as a delivery station that will help speed up deliveries specifically to Staten Island and Manhattan customers, said Rachael Lighty, regional manager, external communications for Amazon Operations.

“In addition to the more than 4,500 full-time employees at our Staten Island fulfillment center, we are excited to continue our investment in Staten Island with the launch of our new delivery station later this year, which will provide hundreds of full- and part-time job opportunities for the talented local workforce and speed up delivery times for customers,” said Lighty.

Borough President James Oddo touted Amazon’s investment into Staten Island’s job pool. “That’s a huge number of jobs Amazon has created and will create at the Matrix site,” he said.

“Staten Islanders use eCommerce. They like their packages delivered and delivered quickly,” added Oddo about the Last Mile facility.

PACKAGE DELIVERY SCHEDULES

The Bloomfield-based delivery station will “power the last mile of our order process and help speed up deliveries for customers,” said Lighty.

When asked about the times in which Amazon will be delivering packages from its last-mile facility, Lighty said it will vary.

“Packages are shipped there from neighboring Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers and loaded into vehicles to get delivered to customers. Packages do move in and out of the delivery station in different ways throughout the day. We are constantly leveraging technology and innovating on behalf of our customers to make deliveries safe, efficient and convenient,” she added.

Those Initiatives include Locker and Counter pickup points, Amazon Day where Prime members can choose a day of the week for their package to arrive, and investments in reducing and optimizing packaging to put smaller vehicles on the road, Lighty said.

In addition to vans, the company employs different modes of package delivery, including Amazon Scout, a six-wheel robot.

“We’re continuing to test innovations, such as Amazon Scout, bike delivery and electric vehicles as a part of our overall commitment to be zero carbon by 2040. In New York City, we deliver packages on foot, have expanded our use of traditional bicycles, and are piloting about 90 electric cargo bikes to make grocery deliveries to customers in Manhattan and Williamsburg. Stay tuned for more delivery options for Staten Island customers,” said Lighty.

DELIVERY SERVICE PARTNER PROGRAM

In addition to receiving packages faster, the new delivery station will provide opportunities for entrepreneurs who would like to start their own package delivery business via Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner Program.

“We are looking for hands-on leaders who are passionate about hiring and coaching great teams,” says Amazon on its website about its Delivery Service Partner Program. “With low startup costs, built-in demand, and access to Amazon’s technology and logistics experience, this is an opportunity to build and grow a successful package delivery business.”

AMAZON FULLFILLMENT CENTER

The new Last-Mile building is located next to its existing $100 million, 855,000-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center.

Amazon first launched its fulfillment operations in New York in 2018 with its Staten Island fulfillment center. “Currently, more than 4,500 full-time employees – more than 50% of which call Staten Island home – work alongside Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship customer orders,” said Lighty.

Workers at the facility earn more than minimum wage -- generally between $17.50 and $23 an hour, she said. In addition, the company offers full-time employees comprehensive benefits, including full medical, vision, and dental insurance, as well as a 401(k) with a 50% match starting on day one. The company also offers up to 20 weeks of maternal and parental paid leave.

From 2010 to 2018, Amazon has invested more than $4 billion into its local fulfillment center infrastructure and through compensation to thousands of employees in the state, said Lighty.

“Our fulfillment network supports millions of small-, medium- and large-sized businesses worldwide through our Fulfillment By Amazon offering. There are more than 147,500 authors, sellers and developers in New York, growing their businesses and reaching new customers on Amazon products and services every day,” she said.
