CLAY, N.Y. -- Survey crews are already staking out its grounds, and the bulldozers are expected to arrive soon to wipe out the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club.
After 72 years in business, the family-owned business will shut down on Monday. That’s the last day for golfing. The next day, its clubhouse equipment and golf carts will be auctioned off. And on Wednesday, the rest of its golf course equipment -- lawnmowers, a backhoe, tools -- will be auctioned.
Trammell Crow Co. is buying the golf course on Morgan Road north of the village of Liverpool and plans to build in its place a $350 million, 3.8-million-square-foot distribution center that will employ at least 1,000 people.
More evidence the huge e-commerce warehouse in Clay really will happen?
The Dallas-based developer says it expects to announce a tenant for the center soon. Logistics experts say it will almost surely be online giant Amazon.
Stephen Schmitt, the country club’s general manager, said he’s been getting “a ton of calls” from longtime customers asking when the last day for golfing will be. He said he’s expecting a big crowd Monday of golfers and people who just want to walk around and see the place one last time.
“If they want to see it, this is the time to see it," he said. “It’s nostalgia.”
To mark the occasion, the course will be charging $25, including use of a cart, for 18 holes of golf on Monday. Schmitt said the usual rate is $35.
