RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The Western Colorado football team struggled early on as they quickly went down 14-0, but they soon bounced back and overcame the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines 42-21.
The win moves Western Colorado to 7-1 overall, 6-1 in the RMAC and will hopefully keep them ranked in the top 25.
The Mountaineers put up 301 yards in the air, as Connor Desch went 22 for 39 (56.41 percent) on passing with only one interception. Desch completed passes to nine different receivers with Damian Macias leading the pack with five receptions for 58 yards. Cole Riters had three receptions for an impressive 83 total yards (averaging 27.66 yards a catch). Both Macias and Riters each had one receiving touchdown, along with Malik White who had one touchdown and three receptions for 58 yards.
Cummings led the team in rushing with 74 yards over 24 carries, averaging three yards a carry and a long of 13 yards and had one touchdown. Desch ran eight times for 47 yards and one rushing touchdown.
The offensive line did a great job protecting the quarterback as the Hardrockers were unable to get a sack.
Overall, the Mountaineers racked up 455 yards of offense. As the defense held South Dakota Mines to only 313 yards and 21 points.
Lane Farris had six tackles on the day leading the Mountaineers, as Jaden Armbrust, Trevor Riters and Wyatt Buhr each recorded five tackles. Riters and Dondre Baker led the defense with two tackles for a loss.
The defense was extremely aggressive at getting to the quarterback as the Mountaineers put up eight sacks on the day for 44 yards. Farris, Armbrust and Will Lydle each earned 1.5 sacks, as Kendall Lightfoot and Riters each earned one sack and Jack Anderson, Joey Dill and Carson Mandrell each recorded half a sack.
The Mountaineers will play their next three games at home, starting with Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. in Mountaineer Bowl.
