COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Fresh off winning the Big Ten Conference championship last night, select members of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were back in the water Sunday (March 7) racing for faster times at the OSU Last Chance Meet inside McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Sunday is the final day for men's swimmers to improve their season-best times ahead of the release of the NCAA Championships selections, scheduled for Wednesday (March 10). None of the five swimmers shaved any time during the short-course portion; the closest was freshman Bence Szabados in the 100-yard freestyle, who swam 43.45, which was only .06 off from his time in yesterday's bonus final.
The two swimmers who appear to be closest to NCAA qualification are juniors Eric Storms and AJ Bornstein. Storms is tied for 32nd nationally in the 100-yard backstroke (46.37), while Bornstein is 35th in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:54.42). Before last year's NCAA Championships were canceled due to COVID-19, the top 29 swimmers in each event received invites.
The pool was later switched over to long course so swimmers could race for Olympic Trials cuts. Three Wolverines achieved cuts: Szabados and sophomore Cam Peel in the 50-meter freestyle, and senior Will Roberts in the 200-meter butterfly.
The Wolverines will find out their roster for the NCAA Championships on Wednesday (March 10). The NCAA Championships begin on Wednesday, March 24 in Greensboro, N.C.
