NBA commissioner Adam Silver is targeting a two-to-four week timeline for a decision on whether or not to resume the 2019-20 season, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic. Silver relayed that sentiment on a call with the NBA Board of Governors Tuesday evening.

Silver recently told players that a decision on the fate of the campaign might not come in May, or even early June, per reports from multiple outlets. This new timetable — as Charania notes, the first specific one since the league suspended play — indicates the latest the NBA is willing to go without an official verdict is the second week of June.

The league has already postponed its draft lottery and combine indefinitely, but has yet to make an official determination on any of the regular season or playoff games delayed since March 11, when the league suspended its season due to a positive COVID-19 test by Rudy Gobert.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that participants left the Board of Governors call "increasingly positive about the league's momentum toward a resumption of play this season," but health and safety hurdles persist.

Wojnarowski reported that the league's goal is to acclimate teams and players to a reality where one positive coronavirus test wouldn't completely shut play down again — probably a necessary requirement until a vaccine is available.

While a format of the schedule reportedly remains undecided (e.g. if any regular season games will be played, if a play-in tournament will be explored, etc.), it seems the league is further honing in on the "bubble" concept, with Orlando and Las Vegas the two most viable options, per Wojnarowski.

However, the league office isn't currently optimistic that quick-response testing will be widely accessible within the next month, according to Wojnarowski.

There is still too much unknown to predict which direction the NBA will go on this decision, but at least there is now a timeline to follow. By its end, there is likely to be some clarity on what level of closure the 2019-20 season will have.
