Welp, this is going to be really weird, but at least something is happening.
We have all be waiting eagerly for news regarding baseball in 2020. There are a lot of details and considerations to be sure, but to say that fans have been rabid for some sort of entertainment is an understatement. I am certain that people are on their fourth or more rewatch of Tiger King for crying out loud...even I must admit that I found it more entertaining than I should have.
While the details surrounding when/if the 2020 season will start have yet to get ironed out, we have heard more and more in recent days about the possible format of the 2020 MLB Draft. Now, the player’s union already turned down an offer from MLB about a possible 10 round draft and there will be more on that in a second. However, in the wake of that proposal falling through, JJ Cooper of Baseball America reported that it looked more and more like a five round draft was an inevitability. As usual, JJ was right.
The 2020 Major League Baseball draft will be five rounds, sources tell @kileymcd and me. All players who go undrafted would be eligible to sign for a maximum of $20,000. While there was a proposal to the union for a 10-round draft, the sides didn’t come to an agreement.

The 10-round proposal the union rejected included an interesting twist: essentially it was two five-round drafts. Meaning teams would not have been allowed to use slot money from R6-10 to pay guys in R1-5. Proposal also limited the number of undrafted players teams could sign.

There is a lot to digest here, but the most important bit is that we now know what the draft will look like and when it will occur. Reports elsewhere noted that the draft will occur on June 10-11 and after five rounds, that is a wrap.
One could understandably presume that the players made a ‘mistake’ by not accepting the league’s proposal. However, the caps on the number of undrafted FAs teams could sign and the restrictions on how slot money could be spent on the back half of the draft was too much and showed how committed MLB owners were to severely cutting the costs of the draft for teams. As for the second tweet from Passan regarding team officials/front offices being less than happy about this development, team sources seem to indicate that the reaction to the news is mixed at best although everyone so far seemed to think that this was always a very likely outcome.
