John Oliver has made an offer to the Phillie Phanatic that the famed mascot may not be able to refuse, should he become a free agent later this year.
That is: Become the official mascot of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
“That’s right, Phanatic. Your new team is ready and waiting for you right here,” Oliver said in Sunday’s episode of the show. “Frankly, we’ve spent money on things way stupider than this.”
The team accused original designers Bonnie Erickson and Wayde Harrison of threatening to make the Phanatic a “free agent” after more than 35 years as the Phillies mascot by withdrawing from a 1984 copyright agreement. For $250,000, that agreement granted the Phillies use of the Phanatic “forever,” but federal law stipulates that copyright can be redrawn after 35 years — a deadline that is coming up on June 15 for the Phanatic.
But the most egregious new element: The Phanatic’s new “honker.”
“Look at it. It’s a cylinder now, which is ridiculous — the Phanatic’s honker is supposed to be conical,” Oliver said. “He’s supposed to have a conical honker, and now they’ve made him look stupid.”
Oliver encouraged fans to weigh in on the mascot’s new nose under the hashtag “#RespectTheConicalHonker” — much like Phillies’ fans “#NotMyPhanatic” hashtag that popped up after the new design debuted.
And, after all, the Phantic deserves “a home that doesn’t want to change you into whatever the f — “ the Phils’ new version of the mascot is.
“Mr. Phanatic, you’re about to be a free agent, and if there’s going to be a bidding war, we’re willing to go nuclear,” a narrator in a clip addressing the mascot said. “Name your price, you magnificent beast. Join a new team, and become the official mascot of Last Week Tonight. New York is waiting for you.”
