7 overdoses occur in 72 hours in Duluth; man arrested - Pine Journal

According to Duluth police, investigators from the Lake Super Drug and Violent Crime Task Force arrested the man on second-degree sale of heroin.

The initial investigation into the overdoses led to the arrest, a news release said. Duluth police Lt. Jeff Kazel, who commands the regional Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, said investigators are confident the man is linked to five of the seven overdoses. During the arrest, investigators recovered heroin, cash and other evidence of heroin sales, a news release said. Kazel said the heroin has been sent to a lab for testing.

None of those overdoses were fatal as of Monday afternoon, the news release said.

Meanwhile, two overdoses occurred in Carlton County on Monday, according to Derek Randall, Cloquet's interim police chief. One was in Carlton and the other in Cloquet, Randall said in an email.

The drugs involved in both cases were believed to be heroin, likely laced with fentanyl, he said. The victims were a 20-year-old man from Superior and a 53-year-old woman from Cloquet. Both were taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, he said. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

"We are currently working with the (Lake Superior Drug and Crime) Task Force and Carlton County and the Fond du Lac Police Department on the investigation(s), and to attempt to determine if the drugs are from the same source as the drugs responsible for the overdoses in Duluth," Randall wrote.

The man is being held at the St. Louis County Jail pending formal charges. The News Tribune generally does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.

According to Kazel, there have been 45 overdoses in St. Louis County so far in 2020, with 38 occurring in Duluth. In 2019, there were 230 overdoses countywide with 174 occurring in Duluth.

Anyone with information about heroin or fentanyl dealers is encouraged to report the information to drug task force investigators by calling 218-730-5750.
