4 players on Nets, Lakers' last opponent, have coronavirus - Los Angeles Times

The Lakers plan to get their players tested for the coronavirus Wednesday and have asked their players to self-quarantine for 14 days, according to people familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly.

The information was relayed to players during a conference call Tuesday and follows an announcement by the Brooklyn Nets that four players tested positive for the coronavirus, three without symptoms. The Athletic reported that one of those players was injured Nets star Kevin Durant, who was on the trip to Los Angeles last week.

The Nets beat the Lakers at Staples Center one week ago.

Because of a shortage of tests in California, health officials are refusing to test people who have not had symptoms. Private health clinics are not under such restrictions, but they are encouraged to prioritize people who are ill. A shortage of testing kits hasprevented members of the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors from testing all of their players.

The Golden State Warriors were set to play the Nets last Thursday before all games were postponed indefinitely.

“It is frustrating, but it’s just the reality,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “We’re in the same boat as everybody. It’s very difficult to find a test in California and many places.”

Lakers players were allowed to leave the Los Angeles area this week but asked to check in with team medical personnel every day. They were also told not to work out anywhere except the Lakers’ facility or at their homes.

All four Nets players are currently in isolation and under the care of team doctors.

“The organization is currently notifying anyone who has had known contact with the players, including recent opponents, and is working closely with state and local health authorities on reporting,” the Nets said in a statement. “All players and members of the Nets travel party are being asked to remain isolated, closely monitor their health and maintain constant communication with team medical staff. The health of our players and staff is of the highest priority to the organization and the team is doing everything within its power to ensure that those affected receive the best care possible.”

In total, there have been seven known cases of the coronavirus in the NBA — Utah’s Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, Detroit’s Christian Wood and the four new cases from the Nets.
